Vanessa Williamson, Dean, Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship

As Dean, Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Vanessa is responsible for all aspects of applied research, innovation and entrepreneurship at Seneca, including strategy development and implementation. She plays a leadership role in growing capacity for applied research, developing new public and private partnerships, and attracting and managing external funding to support applied research activities. She also has accountability for HELIX, Seneca’s on-campus entrepreneurship centre, which supports Seneca students and faculty, as well as community youth, interested in starting and building sustainable, scalable businesses.

Throughout her career, Vanessa has led strategic partnerships with private and public sector partners, assisting these organizations to leverage the resources of academia and government to innovate, develop products, build businesses and create jobs. Prior to coming to Seneca, Vanessa worked with Ontario Centres of Excellence, and was the founding Executive Director of the Colleges Ontario Network for Industry Innovation (CONII). In both roles, Vanessa worked extensively with applied research and entrepreneurship leaders across the college sector, gaining an in-depth understanding of best practices at Ontario's colleges and beyond. She also has vast experience in the university and private sectors.

Vanessa holds a B.Sc. (Chemistry and Biochemistry) from University of Guelph, an M.Sc. (Medical Science) from McMaster University, and an MBA from the Ivey School of Business, Western University.

Atani Gopalasingam, Manager, Finance and Operations 

As the Manager, Finance and Operations, Atani is responsible for project accounting, compliance and financial reporting of applied research projects supported by Seneca ARI. She supports project budget planning, claims submission and financial and metrics reporting relating to the department as well as externally funded research-related projects and initiatives. She also oversees the general operational activities of Seneca ARI. Maria has over 20 years’ experience and expertise in financial management, accounting, reporting, budgeting and operations. Atani holds a a Bachelor’s Degree in Administrative Studies (Honours) with a specialization in Human Resources Management.

Applied Research

Ben Rogers, Director, Applied Research

As Director, Applied Research, Ben has primary responsibility for Seneca’s business development activities supporting applied research. This includes building strategic relationships and partnerships within and external to Seneca that are aligned with Seneca strategic and academic priorities. He provides leadership to the Applied Research Team, and supports Seneca faculty and their partners as they develop applied research projects, identify funding sources, and prepare funding applications. Ben also ensures that our industrial collaborations are delivered to the mutual benefit and satisfaction of Seneca and its partners. Ben is an industry-academic partnerships professional with over 12 years of progressive experience in strategic planning, assessing and supporting new partnership opportunities. He has a B.Sc. (Hons.), Science and Business and a Masters of Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology (MBET), both from the University of Waterloo. He is also a member of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), and the Licensing Executive Society (LES).

Ralph Lisak, Research Manager

As a Research Project Manager, Ralph supports all aspects of the applied research process. This includes working in collaboration with faculty and their partners to develop projects, identify funding sources, prepare funding applications, and manage applied research projects. He also supports awareness and outreach activities, within and external to the college. Ralph brings over 20 years of managerial and project experience in hi-tech industries and academia where he had successfully led many projects with significant levels of complexity, uncertainty, and risk. Ralph holds a Ph.D. in Microelectronics and PMP designation and is a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI). He volunteers his time at PMI Lakeshore Chapter.

Andrew Paton, Research Manager

As a Research Project Manager, Andrew supports all aspects of the applied research process. This includes working in collaboration with faculty and their partners to develop projects, identify funding sources, prepare funding applications, and manage applied research projects. He also supports awareness and outreach activities, within and external to the college. His work experience includes varied roles in developing and managing industry-academic collaborations, and providing technical advice and guidance to entrepreneur’s in the sciences and engineering fields. He is also the founder of a spin-out company making organic light-emitting diode (OLED) lighting. Andrew holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, a MSc in Chemistry, BASc in Engineering Science, and has project management training, all from the University of Toronto.

Tina Perricone, Research Manager

As a Research Project Manager, Tina supports all aspects of the applied research process. This includes working in collaboration with faculty and their partners to develop projects, identify funding sources, prepare funding applications, and manage applied research projects. She also supports awareness and outreach activities, within and external to the college. Her work experience includes project management, research accounting, recruitment and selection, event planning and coordination, marketing coordination and social media. Tina holds a diploma in Creative Advertising from the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) and completed an Advanced Project Management Certificate at Seneca. She is currently working on her PMP designation.

Entrepreneurship/HELIX

Chris Dudley, Director, Entrepreneurship/HELIX

As Director, Entrepreneurship, Chris oversees HELIX, Seneca’s On Campus Entrepreneurship incubator, and its associated entrepreneurship activities. This includes supporting strategy development and implementation, developing and delivering HELIX programing, and building relationships and partnerships within and external to Seneca. He is charged with increasing experiential opportunities for budding entrepreneurs and accessing international opportunities for HELIX ventures. Chris brings over 30 years of business and college administration experience to the role, and has led HELIX since its inception in 2014. His educational background includes a Diploma in Marketing, a Bachelor of Administration, and a Masters of Business Administration.

Kate Collins, Project Coordinator/HELIX

As Project Coordinator, Kate assumes key coordination responsibilities within HELIX, including youth engagement and recruitment campaigns, oversight of HELIX cohort intakes, events management, experiential learning opportunities, programming evaluation and development, and identification of strategic planning growth opportunities for HELIX. With specialties in marketing, public relations, organizational capacity building and fund development, and as an entrepreneur herself, Kate has contributed significantly to the launch and growth of HELIX.
