Library and Information Technician (Accelerated)

Program Description

Program curriculum is based on the Guidelines for the Education of Library Technicians produced by the Canadian Federation of Library Associations and changes continuously to reflect the latest developments in the working world. As a result, a great deal of the students’ time is spent using computers and software specific to the library and information industry. This allows the program to focus on practical and experience-based learning, whether students are in class, working independently on assignments or on field placements.

Accelerated Delivery Mode

This accelerated program is for students with previous postsecondary education and the ability to learn in a rapid, condensed format. In this version, first and second semester courses are delivered in the first semester in May and June. Second semester courses are offered in July and August. Students then join the regular 14-week third and fourth semesters.

This program is also offered in a standard four-semester format.

Field Placements

There are two three-week field placements in special libraries, public libraries and/or in school or academic libraries. The program assigns placements with input from the student. A police check is required for many libraries.

Graduates of this long running Seneca program pursue careers in libraries.  The libraries where a grad may work are diverse in nature, ranging from those in businesses, hospitals and law firms to school, college and university libraries, and public libraries.  Bringing together people, information and materials, library technicians meet the challenges of a constantly changing information environment. To do this, they use the latest technologies to organize and retrieve information, and, along with librarians, they are the mainstay of libraries. They like assisting people, performing multiple activities, working with minimal supervision or in a team and are adaptable to change.

This Seneca program has been validated by the Credential Validation Service as an Ontario College Credential as required by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development.

Admission Requirements

Program Eligibility

  • A degree or post-secondary diploma from an accredited institution. Applicants with substantial completion (75%) of a degree may be considered.
  • Academic equivalents for four general arts education credits and College English
    • Students with credentials from a foreign institution must be evaluated course by course through WES or ICAS
  • English Proficiency at the post-secondary level


Although not required for admission, the following are recommended for your success in the program:

  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer skills.

Program Details

The Degree and Credit Transfer Office provides a number of services for students continuing their education at Seneca, and for graduating students considering degree transfer options.

Through transfer agreements and institution partnerships, graduates of this Seneca College program may be eligible for credit at various post-secondary institutions. Please refer to the Degree Transfer Guide for more information.

Transfer Credit may be granted for courses deemed equivalent to courses at Seneca that have been completed at recognized postsecondary institutions. Additional information is available online.
