David Agnew

David Agnew, BA

David Agnew became Seneca’s fifth president in 2009. Mr. Agnew was Secretary to the Cabinet in the Ontario Government from 1992-95 after serving as the Premier’s Principal Secretary. He has held leadership positions in public, private and non-profit sectors, including as President/CEO of UNICEF Canada, Principal at Digital 4Sight, Executive Vice-President and Corporate Secretary for the Credit Union Central of Ontario and Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments. In 1995, he was seconded to the University of Toronto’s Massey College as a Senior Resident. Mr. Agnew is Chair of the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) and interim Chair of the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). He is also on the board of Colleges and Institutes Canada and Polytechnics Canada. He is past chair of Colleges Ontario and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and is a founding member of Sichuan University’s International Advisory Board.


Fareed Amin

Fareed Amin, BA, MPA

Fareed Amin is the inaugural President and Executive Director of the Canada-UAE Business Council (CUBC). Prior to assuming this role, Mr. Amin served as the Senior Vice President, Public Policy, for Walton Development and Management, Canada; with responsibility for leading and executing the government management strategy and public policy relations plan for the Walton Group of Companies (“Walton”) in Ontario. Mr. Amin has over 26 years of distinguished service in the public sector and has gained a comprehensive understanding of the legislative processes and the policy framework that guides growth related initiatives and economic opportunities within the province of Ontario. Mr. Amin held progressively responsible positions in the Government of Ontario including Deputy Minister and Assistant Deputy Minister. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Guyana, a Certificate in Public Administration from the University of Toronto, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Queen’s University and a Certificate in Leadership from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Mr. Amin joined Seneca’s Board of Governors on September 1, 2017.


Janet Beed

Janet Beed, BN, M.Sc.N.

Janet Beed is currently an independent practitioner and advisor with a focus on building organizational capacity, implementing strategic change and maximizing the innovation agenda in health care. Previously, she held the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of the Markham Stouffville Hospital, a community hospital serving more than 340,000 people in York Region. She has held a number of leadership roles including Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, University Health Network, Toronto General Hospital; Vice-President of Organizational Development and Patient Care Programs at the Princess Margaret Hospital/Ontario Cancer Institute; and several senior positions at the Hospital for Sick Children. Ms. Beed was also a Partner in the Global Consulting Practice of Deloitte working in the energy and manufacturing industries with a focus on change management. She has board experience in the not-for-profit and public sectors and currently sits on the boards of the Canadian Institute for Health Information and ventureLAB and is an IHPME fellow at the University of Toronto. She is an invited speaker and conference participant, particularly in the areas of health care strategy and caregiver support. A graduate of Dalhousie University and the University of Toronto, Ms. Beed holds a Master of Nursing degree. Ms. Beed joined Seneca’s Board of Governors on September 1, 2014 and is currently serving as Chair.

Doug Brooks

Doug Brooks, FCPA, FCGA, ACCA, C.Dir

Doug Brooks is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Marketing Association (CMA). The CMA is the only association that embraces Canada’s major business sectors and all marketing disciplines, channels and technologies. Its programs help shape the future of marketing by building talented marketers and business leaders and by demonstrating marketing’s strategic role as a key driver of business success. Prior to joining CMA, Mr. Brooks was the Chief Executive Officer of the Certified General Accountants of Ontario where he played an integral role in the unification of the three accounting bodies in Ontario. Mr. Brooks has enjoyed a diverse career in senior finance, sales and marketing roles at Coca Cola Canada, CBC Television and NHL Enterprises. Active in his community of Newmarket for many years, he received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his service in 2012. Mr. Brooks joined Seneca’s Board of Governors on September 1, 2013.


Chris Bullen

Chris Bullen, BA, MA

Inspector William (Chris) Bullen started his policing career with York Regional Police in 1988. He currently holds the rank of inspector at Corporate Development – Training and Education – Technology and Skills Development Bureau, which offers delivery of training to both sworn and civilian personnel. During his policing career, he has been assigned to the Community Services Bureau, the Community Oriented Response Unit, the Criminal Investigation Bureau, the Public Order Unit, the Traffic Bureau, and the Uniform Recruiting Unit. Outside of policing, he was the previous president and vice-president of the Association of Black Law Enforcers, a former board of director of the Canadian Hearing Society, campaign member of United Way of Greater Toronto, and current Chair of Seneca’s Program Advisory Committee for Police Foundations and Public Safety diploma programs. Mr. Bullen is a graduate of Carleton University, Seneca and Guelph-Humber University. He holds a master’s degree in Leadership from the University of Guelph. Mr. Bullen joined Seneca’s Board of Governors on September 1, 2018.


Ahmed Chakera

Ahmed Chakera, BS

Ahmed Chakera is a Senior Technical Specialist. He has been at Seneca for 27 years in Information Technology Services and has worked as a professor in the Faculty of Continuing Education and Training. He is a graduate of Seneca’s Computer Engineering program and has a degree in IT Global Management from Davenport University. Mr. Chakera joined Seneca’s Board of Governors on September 1, 2016 as the support staff governor.


Michael Chan

Michael Chan

Michael Chan serves as a Senior Business Advisor for Miller Thomson LLP, a national firm providing comprehensive Canadian business and legal help to its clientele. Prior to joining Miller Thomson, he had a distinguished career in public service as a member of the Ontario Legislature for 11 years. First elected in 2007, and re-elected three times before retiring in April 2018, Mr. Chan served continuously as a cabinet minister in portfolios that included Revenue, Citizenship and Immigration, Tourism, Culture and Sport, and International Trade. Mr. Chan arrived in Canada in 1969, determined to thrive in a land of opportunity. In 1975, he joined the insurance industry and, by 1980, became co-owner of an insurance brokerage. Today, his brokerage serves hundreds of professional agents offering personal and commercial insurance products. Mr. Chan is the Honourary Advisor to the Canadian Community Table Tennis Association. He joined Seneca’s Board of Governors on September 1, 2018.


Ebrahim Shafiq

Shafiq Ebrahim, MBA, FICB, ACIB

Shafiq Ebrahim is currently Manager, Commercial Banking with National Bank of Canada. He manages a portfolio of more than 50 borrowing and non-borrowing clients with authorized lending limit of $41 million and deposit business of $183 million. Mr. Ebrahim has been a banker for more than 20 years. He previously worked for HSBC Bank Canada, RBC Royal Bank and Barclays Bank of Canada. He is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (England) and a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers. As a volunteer, Mr. Ebrahim has served as Chair and Board Director of Special Olympics Ontario, Board Director of Mackenzie Health, Board Director of Heart & Stroke Foundation, Chair of Golf Committee, IDRF, Board Trustee of United Way of York Region, Board Trustee and Cabinet Member of United Way of Greater Toronto, and Member of York Regional Police, Police Community Advisory Council. Mr. Ebrahim joined Seneca’s Board of Governors on September 1, 2016.


John Honderich

John Honderich, BA, LLB

John Honderich is currently the Chair of the Board of Torstar and Chair of the Torstar Voting Trust. He has served as Special Advisor to the Premier of Ontario on the future of the Greater Toronto Area and Creative Cities and also on the Attorney General’s panel on Justice and the Media from January 2005 to December 2006. Mr. Honderich served as the Toronto Mayor’s Special Ambassador on Urban Issues from May 2004 to February 2006. He served as Publisher of the Toronto Star from 1994 until May 2004. Prior to his appointment as Publisher, Mr. Honderich was Editor of the Toronto Star from 1988-1994. Mr. Honderich joined Seneca’s Board of Governors on September 1, 2013.


Warren Jestin

Warren Jestin, MA, PhD

Warren Jestin retired from Scotiabank in 2016 after nearly three decades as Chief Economist. He also has worked at the Bank of Canada and taught at a number of Canadian Universities. Warren is an advisor and public speaker on domestic and global economic issues and is Economist in Residence at the University of Guelph’s College of Business & Economics. He is Chair of the Central LHIN’s Board of Directors, sits on the board of the Vineland Research & Innovation Centre, is a Senior Fellow at the C.D. Howe Institute and is past Chair of the Markham Stouffville Hospital Board of Directors. Warren also has been involved with policy committees of the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education, the Learning Partnership, the Canadian and Ontario Chambers of Commerce and the Toronto Board of Trade. He holds a PH.D. from the University of Toronto and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Guelph. In 2016, Warren received the CFPDP’s King Clancy Award in recognition of his support for physically disabled persons. Dr. Jestin joined Seneca’s Board of Governors on Sept. 1, 2014.


Mani Sarna

Mani Sarna

Mani Sarna, a student in the Honours Bachelor of Commerce – Business Management program, was elected as the student governor representative for the 2018-19 academic year. He has worked as an International Student Ambassador, SMILE mentor and served on Seneca’s Student Recreation Council.


Mark Solomon

Mark Solomon, BA, BA Hons, MA

Mark Solomon, Associate Dean, Student Services and Indigenous Education, joined Seneca’s Board of Governors on September 1, 2015 as the administrative staff governor. He was re-elected as the administrative staff governor representative and began serving on the board for a second term on September 1, 2018. He is currently on the Academic Planning and Student Affairs (APSA) committee. He has served on the Finance and Administration Committee (FAC) and was part of the Governance and Nominating Committee’s (GNC) policy review ad-hoc committee last year. Mr. Solomon leads Seneca’s efforts to respond to, and integrate into our curriculum and services, the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission affecting postsecondary education. He oversees student services for both domestic and international students as well as student conduct. Mr. Solomon holds a BA in music and a BA Honours in native studies from Laurentian University, and a MA in social justice and equity studies from Brock University. He has worked at Seneca since 2006 in Student Services with a variety of student groups, including the Leadership Program, First Generation, Aboriginal students and the Seneca Student Federation.


Ashif Somani

Ashif Somani, CPA, CA, CFP

Ashif Somani first joined Seneca’s Board of Governors in 2008. He served two full terms and for his last three years as Chair of the Finance and Administration Committee. Mr. Somani is a Partner with BDO Canada LLP and has more than 30 years of experience providing audit, management and business advisory services to a wide variety of clients. As a member of BDO’s Quality Assurance team, he is responsible for establishing and monitoring quality standards for the firm’s accounting and auditing practices. Mr. Somani is a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) of Ontario, CPA Canada and is a former treasurer and board member of the York Region Children’s Aid Society. He is currently the Chair of the Finance and Investment Committee for Mackenzie Health Foundation as well as Treasurer of the Board. Mr. Somani is a Chartered Professional Accountant and Certified Financial Planner. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto. Mr. Somani re-joined Seneca’s Board of Governors on Sept. 1, 2018 and is currently serving as Vice-Chair.


Belinda Tang

Belinda Tang, B.COMM, M.HRM

Belinda Tang is currently a Certified Executive and Organization Coach. She consults with organizations on global talent, leadership and organizational development. Her areas of industry expertise are in information technology, where she dedicated most of her corporate career, and in health care and education, where she served in several board directorships for more than 15 years. Ms. Tang’s corporate career started in Canada, before moving to New York, and Shanghai, China as IBM’s Head of Human Resources for Global Business Services for the Americas and Growth Markets. In addition to developing diverse leadership talent inside, she has partnered with several Fortune 100 companies to develop the next generation of CEOs. A graduate of the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, Ms. Tang received her Master of Human Resources Management from York University. She has served on a number of non-profit boards, including a nine-year tenure at the Markham Stouffville Hospital. She has also served on the Asia Society Talent Council in New York. She joined the Seneca Board of Governors in September 2016 and is currently serving as Vice-Chair.

Vince Timpano

Vince Timpano, MBA, ICD.D

Vincent R. Timpano is President, Americas Coalitions and Executive Vice-President for Aimia Inc. In this role, Mr. Timpano has full accountability for leading and growing Aimia’s Coalition and data driven marketing business, Aeroplan, and serves as a Director of PLM, Aimia’s joint venture with Aeroméxico that operates the Club Premier loyalty program. Mr. Timpano is also responsible for launching and developing new coalition programs across North and South America. Previously, he served as President and CEO of Aeroplan, where he established the strategic direction and led each of Aimia Canada’s businesses. Before Aeroplan, Mr. Timpano was President, Coca-Cola Ltd where he led the company’s beverage businesses in Canada. Prior to holding that position, he served as President and CEO for The Minute Maid Company Canada, an operating group of The Coca-Cola Company. Mr. Timpano is currently the Chair, United Way Toronto and York Region, as well as Chair of its Governance and Human Resources Committee. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Business for the Arts. Mr. Timpano holds a Masters of Business Administration degree from the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario and the ICD.D certification from the Institute of Corporate Directors. Mr. Timpano joined Seneca’s Board of Governors on September 1, 2016.


Rashpal Uppal-Assi

Rashpal Uppal-Assi, CITP, CSCMP, MBA

Rashpal Uppal-Assi is a professor with the School of International Business and Management. During her career, she has worked as a practitioner and consultant with public, private and NGO sector companies driving efficiency in supply chain management and processes. Ms. Uppal-Assi has also held several roles with the Supply Chain Management Association. In 2015, she was appointed as a member of the National Case Competition Advisory Board. Ms. Uppal-Assi holds a MBA from Athabasca University, an International Business Administration Diploma from Seneca College, a Certified Supply Chain Management Professional designation, and a Certified International Trade Professional designation. Ms. Uppal-Assi joined Seneca’s Board of Governors on September 28, 2016 as the faculty governor.
